The Dior Saddle bag is one of the most iconic designer handbags in modern fashion. I’ve had my eye on this bag for quite some time. Unique and eye-catching, it’s a timeless treasure that will never go out of style. Read on for my Dior bag review.
The birth of the iconic Dior Saddle Bag
It was 1996 when John Galliano joined Christian Dior as creative director. He designed the first Dior saddle bag in 1996. This version made its debut in Galliano’s spring/summer 2000 collection. It gained instant success and started a new fashion trend overnight. Every “it girl”, from Beyonce to Jennifer Lopez, to Elle Macpherson, was wearing the cowboy-inspired iconic bag. It even made an appearance in Sex and the City, as one of Carrie Bradshaw’s wardrobe staples. It became one of the classic “it bags” of modern fashion history.
Fast forward to 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri is the new creative director at Dior. She is the first woman to hold the job in history. During this time, the original version had been out of production of years. Chiuri surprised everyone by launching the Saddle bag 2.0 at the Dior fall/winter 2018 show. Her versions include the black calfskin, logoed canvas, and patchworked florals. She also included the famous C and D gold clasps.
“I thought this collection would be an opportunity to revive [the saddlebag’s] timeless beauty. I consider this icon of the house’s recent history the perfect accessory to deal with this battle that is daily life . . . It’s so comfortable to wear with its long strap that you almost forget it’s there,” said Chiuri.
The new version is a bit larger than the original design. But you’re still getting the unique signature handbag that made fashion history.
