My favorite self-care habit is getting a good night’s rest. Good quality sleep is essential to my health and well-being. It’s the one thing I never try to skip out on! Studies show getting good quality sleep on a regular basis can have many health benefits. These benefits include a positive mood, healthier heart, and steadier blood sugar.
I’m sharing my 3 favorite sleep products to help you get a good night’s rest and sweet dreams!
1. Weighted Blanket
I’m obsessed with weighted blankets for many reasons. The pressure from using a weighted blanket helps put me in a relaxed state. Using a weighted blanket makes me feel like someone is holding me tight as I fall into a deep slumber. Weighted blankets help ground your body and push it downward while you sleep. The grounding helps stimulate deep pressure touch (DPT). DPT is a type of therapy that uses firm, hands-on pressure to reduce anxiety and stress.
Studies show “grounding” can reduce night time levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is often produced when your brain thinks you’re under attack. Grounding helps trigger the release of the feel-good hormones dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine and serotonin help reduce anxiety, stress, and depression. The release of these powerful hormones from DPT makes it easier to fall asleep at night.
A good rule of thumb for picking out a weighted blanket that is 10% of your body weight for the greatest effect.
2. Air Purifier
One of the best kept secrets for getting a good night’s rest is the air purifier. An air purifier removes harmful airborne particles from the air. Some examples are mold, pollen, and dander which can make it difficult to sleep at night. An air purifier can also serve as a soft white noise maker that blocks out outside noise while you sleep.
It’s important to select an air purifier that fits your needs so do your research beforehand. I chose the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool™ HP04 purifying heater + fan to help alleviate my allergy and asthma symptoms as I sleep. But there are many great air purifier brands out there. You need to pick the one that will work best for you.
3. Essential Oils + Diffuser
Essential oils can be a powerful way to help you get a good night’s rest. My favorite essential oils for sleep are Lavender and Frankincense. Drop 2-3 drops into a diffuser and relax as the oils fill your room with sweet and relaxing aromas. You’ll (hopefully) be falling into a deep and peaceful slumber in no time.
It’s important to know that many essential oils adapt differently to many people. An essential oil may produce a calming effect on some and a stimulating effect on others.
